After breakfast in our little hotel very close to the Colosseum, we ventured out early for the 8.30 opening of the Colosseum – only a tiny queue and a distinct lack of the shifty-looking souls we had been warned about. The Colosseum is a structure of such massive scale for its time – and as for the level below ground, I found it rather eerie – hard to imagine the mindset of those held there for the pleasure of the Emperors.
Next stop the Palatine Hill with its palace ruins and pretty gardens – and finally the Roman Forum, the civic centre , full of crumbling but impressive ruins. it was an unforgettable three hour stroll through history.
