Jo Aleh and Olivia (Polly) Powrie…. brillliant!! Winners of the 470 class at Weymouth and securing our first gold medal in a boat with a rudder since Sir Russell Coutts in 1984. Young ladies, you are in brilliant company! Lisa Carrington in the K-1 200 Kayak final at Eton Dorney – you blitzed them young lady – fantastic!. All three won in such emphatic style and will surely inspire young New Zealand women to try following in their footsteps. We have such wonderful role models in the women currently in our Olympic team, many of whom are involved in water sports – Emma Twigg, Juliette Haigh, Rebecca Scown, Anna Reymer and Fi Paterson in Rowing and and Erin Taylor in Kayaking. Now Jo, Olivia and Lisa can truly say they are the most inspirational of all!
And of course the brilliant achievement of Kayla Sharland and the Women’s Black Sticks Hockey team must be recognised- a group of talented, committed and gorgeous women, who provided us with some of the most thrilling moments of the Games, performing well beyond expectation.
Last but not least, we have the silver medal performances of Sarah Walker in the BMX, and mighty Valerie Adams in the shot put – you rock girls – every single one of you!
