I can truly say that throughout the Women’s Shot put event at the London Olympics, something did not feel quite right – it wasn’t so much that Valerie was throwing poorly, but rather that Belarusian Nadzeya Ostapchuk was throwing so well… Now we know why! Ms Ostapchuk has been stripped of her gold medal for failing a drugs test, and now the gold goes to its rightful owner – our Valerie. What an emotional rollercoster these Games have been for her. It is such a pity she couldn’t have been presented with the gold medal after her event, so she could enjoy the celebration and adulation in the stadium with her team mates, family members and coach.

However, in the long run, what matters most, is that Valerie is a champion – a world champion, an Olympic champion, and now the official gold medalist in the Women’s shot put at the 30th Olympiad in London – all is as it should be – congratulations Valerie, you are truly a legend!
