Birthdays are usually fun days, and today has been no exception. Our friend Kim welcomed in another year and the morning heralded a great day, starting with taking the Eurostar to Paris.

We took breakfast in the hotel so it was easy for us to pack up and take the short walk across the road to the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras. The business class lounge set us up very nicely for the trip and before we knew it we were speeding through the Channel Tunnel. In what seem like the blink of an eye we were in rural France, hurtling our way to Paris.

As Ivor was familiar with the RER/Metro service, we managed to get ourselves to what we thought would be the closest station to Hotel Splendid Etoile but we were a little previous, by two stations -so we trundled up the Champs Elysees dragging our very heavy bags behind us – exercise done for the day and a bit of sightseeing as well.

Hotel Splendid Etoile  did not disappoint – our room is fabulous- very elegant, and beautifully furnished, and the bonus is the balcony – we can step out on to it, and the Arc de Triomphe is there to greet us – magic. Paris is looking less lush at this time of the year since the trees are already losing their leaves, floating aimlessly to the ground and onto the pavements, making quite a mess underfoot.

Kim and I had a girls wander up and down the Champs Elysees, and then got ready to go and find a nice place to celebrate Kim’s birthday and we surely found it – La Petit Pergolese provided a perfect ending to the day. It had been recommended and we were not disappointed. The food was beautiful presented, absolutely delicious, and the wait staff unobtrusively attentive. I had  mentioned we were celebrating a birthday and Kim’s dessert arrived complete with candle!

Tomorrow we plan to cram in as much as we can in one day – watch this space however, we are having wifi issues which are affecting all our devices, so posting may be erratic… meanwhile enjoy some photos….
