After farewelling our brilliant host Walter (from Bronzino House), we taxied out to Linate Airport to pick up our leased Renault Grand Scenic, and after a pleasant drive via Lecco and Monza, we are settled in the picturesque village of Varenna. Fortunately, we managed to get a space in the public carpark, which meant a short walk to the hotel dragging all our luggage, but it was surprisingly easy.
We have a quirky two bedroom apartment with a terrace overlooking the lake – Casa Rossa and it is perfect! The apartment is owned by Albergo Milano Hotel, two doors up, which is where we can take our breakfast each morning -it has a magnificent rooftop restaurant, positioned to get the best view overlooking the lake, so we are anticipating a great breakfast experience in the morning.
The temperature today is 28 degrees and it is quite humid. There is a strange blue haze surrounding the mountains and lake, making for hazy photographs. Initially we thought we had no air-conditioning, but luckily we were wrong, and the air conditioning is roaring away as I write this.
We had a very relaxed lunch in the cafe beside Casa Rossa – we sat munching away with the clear lake water lapping way on the wall below, and the swans and ducks kept us entertained. We have had a leisurely wander around along the lakeside walkway and booked our private boat tour for tomorrow, which is weather dependent.
Wine o’clock has come and gone and we have just returned from a very nice dinner at a restaurant up in the square, which earlier in the day was bustling with visitors who had arrived by coach. Being Monday tomorrow, we are hoping to find the town is quieter – time will tell, but it is so beautiful it won’t really matter if it is busy…. looking forward to breakfast on the hotel balcony tomorrow…
